U can get a small freeware called Gmail Assistant from .It does the job.

Windows XP comes with Outlook Express and Windows Vista comes with Mail. Personally, I enjoy using Mozilla Thunderbird, but that’s not an option for you because you said it doesn’t work; what doesn’t work with Mozilla Thunderbird?

You mean, notifier? Gmail notifier does well. Part of Google Desktop. On the Mac, get Gmail widget. On Firefox, there’s a Gmail Notifier add-on which pops up a little balloon when mail arrives. Each of these lets you see a preview of the incoming…but, of course, not the entire text. The Gmail widget for Mac lets you download the entire text.

you can use your own email client/software. gmail gives you that option.
