If you want better access to your contact list in gmail and are available to chat through gmail, then instead of just seeing on the left border who is available for chat, get the small download and easy-to-use IM application from google called gTalk.

Mine is in my start up menu when the computer turns on, and on my task bar. It notifies me of new emails and if I pull it up to desktop I can see from my contacts, who is online in their gmail and who is not. Great application.
