Is it possible to send an empty chat in gmail?

How can you send a blank chat line or a bunch of spaces in gmail chat? My friend did it, but i don’t know how.

    Use a non-breaking space (see source).

    If using Windows, you can make such a character in a textbox by holding down the ALT key, pressing the numbers “0″, “1″, “6″, and “0″ in that sequence, and then releasing the ALT key.
