In Google’s Gmail, is there a way you can set your browser to notify you when you have a new message?

I would like to be notified of new mesages without having to update/refresh my screen every time. I like MSN messenger because it shows when you have a new hotmail message and all you have to do is continually run it in the background. Is there a way to do this for a gmail account?
