How long till a Gmail username becomes available?

A friend of mine deleted his gmail account, and I want to register with his user name, but it says the name is unavailable. I emailed him and it says FAILURE NOTICE, so I know he did delete it.
So does anyone know how long I have to wait till that name becomes available?

Possibly never because you will be getting email’s from things that your friend signed up for. Gmail won’t allow that, they want to give out fresh, never been used accounts.
