How do I see all of my online Gmail contacts in the chat view?

Is there any way of finding out which of my many Gmail contacts that use the chat interface, and have those automatically pop up in the Chat pane when they’re online?

    The chat view in gmail automatically displays the contacts who are online “at the top”. If you don’t trust the system and still want to check, just click on “Show all my contacts” and you’ll be able to check who is online.
