Because Google keeps increasing the amount of total storage you are allowed (Yahoo! just give you unlimited storage rather then doing anything so fussy and gimmicky).

The space for free storage on gmail is increasing because Google keeps increasing the amount of total storage you are allowed. As google is making everything better.
