If I send and receive emails on my yahoo or gmail account at work, can my office see the actual emails?

I’m wondering if they can see the actual emails or just see that I’ve been on yahoo and gmail. It seems like they shouldn’t be able to actually read what I send to people or receive from them.
I’m looking for straight answers and don’t need any wisecracks or lectures. Thanks.

Generally the answer is yes. The IT department is usually able to fairly easily monitor all information that passes over their network and would be able to see the actual content of your emails. Many companies actually routinely monitor internet usage as a security mechanism to ensure no inappropriate conduct is taking place.
It may seem like an invasion of privacy but, legally, the computer system is owned by your employer and they have the right to monitor use of that system.
