How do I import my gmail messages into Thunderbird?

On my last computer, when I set up Thunderbird it automatically downloaded all my gmail messages.
Now, on my new computer, I downloaded a newer version of Thunderbird but don’t know how to import my mail from gmail into my Thunderbird.

My idea was to do it indirectly by importing my gmail mail into Outlook, and then transfer it from Outlook into Thunderbird, but I can’t figure out how to do that (or even if I can).

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    1) Setup the GMail account in T-Bird
    2) Right Click on the account title & select Properties
    3) Look for Server Settings under the GMail account
    4) UNCLICK the “Leave messages on Server” box
    5) Then click Okay

    That should work.

    Good luck!
